Senior Operations Engineer

 

Resonate has pioneered Insights Driven Media based on values, a completely new way to identify and reach via online media buys, highly targeted audiences online. We target people based on attitudes, values, and beliefs that drive voting and advocacy behavior, as well as brand purchase decisions. We are seeking an experienced IT professional to build, manage and maintain critical infrastructure for our rapidly growing SaaS company in Reston.  In this position, you will have ownership over Information Technology planning, implementation, and support for Resonate’s internal and externally facing technologies.

 

To be successful in this role, you’ll apply your knowledge of hardware, systems and networking, while also helping Resonate evolve our infrastructure to take advantage of highly scalable hosting, virtualization and software options available on the cloud. 

 

We’re a start up, so the responsibility of owning all internal and externally facing Information Technology infrastructures is a big one.   The right candidate will understand the vital impact of all of their contributions to the company, from implementing scalable managed infrastructure, to deploying a distributed cloud solution.   Each task contributes to the overall goal we all share, making Resonate a recognized leader in the online media industry.

 

This role involves direct, hands-on work designing, building, and managing our infrastructures.  This role does not centrally involve desktop or back-office support, but will have some oversight over that function, particularly where back-office and hosting infrastructure overlap.


Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Set up, installation, and maintenance, and systems administration of our existing Linux and Windows production, development and test servers.
  • Development of strategies for scale, security, and back up for Resonate Network’s SaaS product
  • Investigate alternative hosting options (Cloud, Managed, blended, etc.), selecting appropriate services, and managing migrations
  • Collaborate with our data architecture team to develop strategies for performance tuning of Resonate’s Internet-scale data platform
  • Develop comprehensive IT process and documentation that will scale with the rapid growth
  • Provide IT support for new server builds, networking, and storage systems to Research and Development
  • Continually strive to automate and streamline operations and maintenance processes by identifying areas of improvement, writing scripts, and documentation

 

Required Skills and Experience

 

  • 5 plus years experience as a Systems Administrator for production Linux and Windows systems.
  • Experience with very large data sets.  Experience in the 10’s to 100’s of TB preferred.
  • Experience with Web based products is ideal
  • Experience with Xen or VMWare virtualization servers is necessary
  • Experience writing scripts (python, perl, shell, batch, etc.)
  • Experience with standard monitoring systems configuration and customization (Nagios, Cacti, Splunk, SNMP, Gomez, etc..)
  • Experience with firewalls, load balancers, switches, and other network equipment
  • Experience with cloud computing a strong plus
  • Hands-on support for lab machines, development machines, and production machines in a variety of environments
  • System administration for open source application servers and services: Apache/Tomcat, SSH, NFS, SMTP, etc.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP and networking technologies (bonding, VLAN tagging, subnetting)
  • Familiarity working with agile development cycles a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with JIRA a plus
  • Excellent communication, organization, project prioritization, and time management skills
  • Keen troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness to work after hours and weekends as required by the reality of running a production environment; willing to be "on call" during these hours as needs arises.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent training in a technical, math or engineering field of study
